Baked Breaded Beef Steak (Bistec Empanado al Horno) – beef steaks that are tendereized, marinated and breaded before frying or baking. A simple and easy recipe for a tender, juicy and flavorful beef steak. Traditionally, round steaks were sliced ¼-inch thick, tenderized, marinated, breaded, and then fried. Today, we tend to use sirloin, which is a more tender cut of meat compared to round steak. I also prefer to bake the breaded beef steaks instead of frying them for a much healthier dish.
To save on food preparation time, you can ask the butcher to slice and tenderize the meat for you. Furthermore, some grocery stores package the beef steaks already sliced and tenderized.
Tenderizing the Slices of Sirloin Beef Steak!

This is 1 pound of top sirloin steaks, sliced ¼-inch thick, trimmed of excess fat and rinsed.
NOTE: One pound will yield approximately 6 slices of sirloin steak.

I always prefer to tenderize the beef steaks. Place one slice of sirloin steak on top of wax paper. With a meat mallet, pound each side. This breaks up the muscle fibers to help soften and tenderize the meat. Continue this process for the remaining steak slices.
Marinating the Slices of Sirloin Beef Steak!

In a bowl, add the marinating ingredients: 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil, 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar, 3 minced garlic cloves, 1 teaspoon lite salt, ½ teaspoon black pepper and ½ teaspoon adobo without salt.
NOTE: Adobo without salt can be purchased online.

Using a whisk, stir all the ingredients until well blended.

Pour the marinade over the steaks and coat them evenly. Cover bowl with lid and refrigerate for 4 hours or overnight.
NOTE: This recipe will yield 6 slices of sirloin steak.
Preparing the Breadcrumbs for the Baked Breaded Beef Steaks!

Using a mini food processor, place as many crackers the prep bowl will hold and grind until the crackers are completely crumbled.
NOTE: One sleeve of crackers (saltine crackers with saltless tops) will bread at least 1 pound of beef steaks.

This is the consistency we want for the breading. Place the breadcrumbs in a shallow pan. Repeat this process.
Selecting Another Option to Make Breadcrumbs!

If you do not have a mini food processor, then place the crackers inside a gallon plastic bag.

With a rolling pin, crumble the crackers.

We just finished crushing the crackers with a rolling pin. Again, this is just another option to make breadcrumbs if you do not own a mini food processor.
Beating the Whole Eggs!

Place 4 large eggs in a bowl.

Using a fork, beat the eggs.
Breading the Sirloin Steaks!

The slices of sirloin steak have been marinating for 4 hours in the refrigerator so we can start breading them. We have 3 shallow pans with bread crumbs, beaten eggs, and bread crumbs.

First, coat one slice of steak with the bread crumbs.

Secondly, dip into the beaten eggs.

Lastly, coat the steak again with bread crumbs. This will create a thicker outer crust. As each steak is breaded, place them on a plate.

Cover each plate with plastic wrap and place in the refrigerator for 30 minutes to bind the breading.
Baking the Breaded Beef Steaks!
Preheat oven to 350°F. Spray the bottom of baking pan, measuring 13 X 9 X 2 inches, with extra virgin olive oil.
NOTE: For this recipe, you will need several baking pans.

Remove breaded beef steaks from the refrigerator and placed them in baking pan. Spray the breaded beef steaks on top with olive oil on both sides.

Bake in oven uncovered until steaks are golden brown on one side. For this cooking demonstration, I just plan to bake one pan.

Once they are golden brown at the bottom (about 25 minutes of baking), turn them over to brown the other side.

After a total of 50 minutes of baking, the breaded beef steaks have a golden-brown crust on both sides.
Baked Breaded Beef Steak (Bistec Empanado al Horno)!
By breading the steaks twice, you can see how this creates a thicker outer crust.

This dish is usually served with white rice, stewed beans and tostones (double fried green plantains). Enjoy a much healthier version of preparing Baked Breaded Beef Steaks.

The meat is definitely tender, juicy and with lots of flavor. The golden-brown crust has a crispy texture.

Hola Dc, I am glad you found a recipe for Baked Breaded Beef Steak. It is delicious and much healthier than frying, which is the preferred method of preparing this dish. Thank you for visiting my food blogging website.
Can I use cube steak instead?
Hola David, Yes, you can definitely use cube steaks. Traditionally, the round steak was the preferred meat for this dish decades ago. The cube steak is usually made from the round steak or sirloin that has been tenderized. When a steak is tenderized (round or sirloin), meaning the pounding process, it is considered a cube steak. Have a nice weekend.
