What are Yaniclecas? They are delicious crispy flaky fried breads known as Johnny Cakes. No, they are not “arepas.” The Dominicans introduced the Yaniclecas to Puerto Rico. However, the Dominicans call them Yaniqueques. You will only find recipes for Yaniclecas in Puerto Rican cookbooks that were published during the 1930’s through 1950’s. I grew up eating Yaniclecas with a strong cup of Puerto Rican coffee.
