Grape Juice Punch

(Ponche de Uva)

Grape Juice Punch (Ponche de Uva) is a popular nutritional beverage that is served in Puerto Rico to increase one’s energy level.  In our culture, if you are anemic or constantly tired, our mothers will most likely prepare this beverage with just 3 main ingredients:  egg yolk, sugar, and grape juice.  The egg-yolk mixture provides a smooth texture to the punch.  This is such a refreshing drink, and it can be also served over ice.

Preparing the Egg-Yolk Mixture!

Separate the egg white from the yolk, using an egg separator.  For this recipe, I will be using one egg yolk.  Some individuals prepare this drink with two egg yolks.  For your information, the egg yolk contains protein, vitamins and minerals.

Place the egg yolk with at least 2 tablespoons of sugar or to taste into a glass.

With a fork, stir rapidly until a creamy consistency is formed.

This is the consistency that we are looking for.  The egg-yolk mixture is ceamy with a pale-yellow color.

Mixing the Juice to Make the Grape Juice Punch!

We can now pour at least 1 cup of room temperature grape juice in small amounts.  The grape juice contains antioxidants.

NOTE:  The regular grape juice has a high sugar content.  However, you can purchase grape juice with zero sugar or light sugar at the supermarkets.

Stir until well blended, using a fork.

Add the remaining fruit juice in small amounts, and stir well.

Once you pour and stir the remaining fruit juice, a foam will form on top.

NOTE:  After a few minutes, the foam will then thicken on top.
