Air Fryer Sweet Potatoes are a healthier option to enjoy fried foods with less calories and less fat. They are crispy on the outside while tender and sweet inside. Sweet potato fries can be served as a side dish to accompany your main course or as an excellent healthy snack. In our culture, mayo-ketchup is often provided as a dipping sauce but you can definitely serve the fries with regular ketchup.
When I visited Puerto Rico last year, I many times ordered sweet potato fries to accompany my main dish. Since we tend to consume a lot of fried foods, I decided to experiment with the air fryer to create well seasoned crispy and tender sweet potato fries. What a success! The fries were super crunchy and tasty with minimal oil.
Describing the Sweet Potato!
The Sweet Potatoes are root vegetables and tubers. They come in many varieties with different colors, shapes and sizes. This particular sweet potato has a reddish-brown skin color and has an evenly fat middle for consistent shaped fries. Therefore, they are an excellent choice for preparing sweet potato fries.
Other sweet potatoes are shaped like a football with tapered ends. Most sweet potatoes have an orange flesh with a soft texture and sweet taste when cooked.
For your information, a regular potato has a higher starch content compared to a sweet potato. Therefore, it is not necessary to soak the sweet potato to remove the starch like you would for a regular potato.
Peeling and Cutting the Air Fryer Sweet Potato!
Cut off both ends and peel the potato with a sharp knife or a potato peeler.
Rinse the sweet potato and pat dry with a paper towel.
With a sharp knife, cut the sweet potato in half lengthwise.
We are ready to cut each half into sweet potato fries.
Shaping and Cutting the Sweet Potato into Fries!
Place the flat side down and cut lengthwise into approximately ½-inch slices.
Both halves are cut into ½-inch slices.
Take each slice and cut into at least ½-inch sticks. Place in a bowl.
The fries have a thickness of ½ inch. I would recommend not to cut the fries below ¼-inch thick when air frying. They can burn and turn dark brown much quicker.
Seasoning the Air Fryer Sweet Potatoes!
In a small bowl, add ¼ teaspoon black pepper, 1 teaspoon lite salt, ½ teaspoon garlic powder, and ½ teaspoon onion powder. Mix the seasoning ingredients until well blended.
Lightly coat the fries with ½ to 1 tablespoon of avocado oil. Toss fries with your hands to coat them evenly.
NOTE: I use avocado oil because it has a high smoke point – 520ºF. However, you can also use other oils like olive oil.
Season the fries with the condiments we prepared earlier. Add some of the condiments on top of fries and bring the bottom fries to the top. Sprinkle some more condiments and turn the fries over several times to make sure to coat them evenly.
Place 1 tablespoon of cornstarch into a mesh strainer. Tab on the side of strainer to sprinkle some cornstarch over the fries and toss the fries. The cornstarch will provide a crispier texture to the fries. Use the necessary amount of cornstarch to coat the fries.
We just finished seasoning the Sweet Potato Fries!
Preheating the Air Fryer – Air Fryer Sweet Potatoes!
Preheat the air fryer to reduce the time for cooking and crisping the food. Attach diffuser to bottom of basket and insert basket into pot.
Close the crisping lid and preheat the unit for 5 minutes. Turn on the power and select the air crisp program. Set the temperature to 360°F and set the time to 5 minutes. Press the Start/Stop button to begin.
Air Frying the Sweet Potato Fries!
The unit is preheated so let’s start air frying the first batch. Carefully place the sweet potato fries in the basket and arrange them in a single layer. Space them evenly apart for consistent browning and crisping.
NOTE: In order to achieve a crunchy and crispy texture, the fries should not overlap in the basket. For this reason, I am only able to place a limited amount of fries into basket. Therefore, we will be cooking the fries in two batches.
Close lid and select the Air Crisp program. Set temperature to 330°F and set the time to 20 minutes. Press the Start/Stop button to begin. We will check on the fries after 10 minutes of air frying.
After 10 minutes of cooking, let’s open the lid to check on the fries. The fries are starting to cook and crisp. You can already see some darker spots on the fries.
Turn them over carefully to the other side, using tongs and space them apart. The fries are very hot at this point. The basket and inside pot is extremely hot as well.
Close the lid again. The cooking process will automatically resume when the lid is closed.
We just finished air frying the first batch of sweet potato fries. Open lid and check them for crispiness and doneness.
The sweet potato fries are golden brown with more darker crispy spots. They are ready. Remove from basket, using tongs and place on a wire rack to cool for 2 to 3 minutes. Repeat this process for the second batch of fries.
When you place the sweet potato fries on the wire rack to cool, make sure to space them apart to avoid any steaming in order to crisp.
