French Fries – Air Fryer

(Papitas Fritas - Air Fryer)

My favorite breakfast as a child in the United States was fried eggs over french fries.  When I moved to Puerto Rico, my family would prepare fried eggs with fried ripe plantains.  Click on the link to learn How to Prepare Fried Ripe Plantains – Air Fryer.

I can now enjoy french fries with my fried eggs for breakfast without sacrificing the taste and texture of the fries.  In addition, a healthier version of preparing fried foods using an air fryer.

A Little Bit of History!

The potato originated in the Andes.  However, it is believed to have been first domesticated in the Southern region of Peru and Northwestern region of Bolivia.   The Spanish word for potatoes in Spain is “Patatas.”   Therefore, the English word “Potato” comes from the Spanish word “Patata.”   Let’s take this a little further –  The Spanish word “Patata” comes from the Quechua word for potato “Papa” and the Taíno word for sweet potato “Batata.”   Very interesting piece of information!

Let’s Start Peeling and Cutting the Potatoes!

With a potato peeler, peel two russet potatoes.

You can leave the skin on the potatoes if you so desire.

With a knife, cut the potato into ¼ to ½-inch slices.

Cut each slice into ¼ to ½-inch sticks or fries.

Rinse fries after peeling and cutting the potatoes.

You can cut the potatoes according to your size preference.

Let’s Coat the French Fries!

Pour 1½ teaspoons of olive oil on top of french fries along with ¼ teaspoon of salt and black pepper.

With your hands, coat the french fries evenly with the oil mixture.

Let’s Preheat the Air Fryer!

To preheat the air fryer, press the power button.  The control panel will display the default cooking temperature (370°F), which is the correct temperature for preheating air fryer.

The Air Fryer Model that I purchased is the Power XL Vortex Air Fryer.  Please read the entire Owner’s Manual before operating an Air Fryer.

Press the Timer Control Button.  Decrease preheat cooking time to 3 minutes by selecting the down (∨) symbol.

After 3 minutes, the air fryer will beep.  Remove basket from the air fryer and place basket on a trivet.

Insert fry tray into basket and push down until the fry tray snaps into position.

It’s Time to Air Fry the French Fries!

Insert air fryer basket with french fries into the unit.

Press the power button to turn on unit.  The control panel will display the default cooking temperature (370°F), which is the cooking temperature that I desire.

Press the Timer Control Button to set the cooking time to 10 mintues.   However, halfway through the cooking time (5 minutes) toss the fries.

You can adjust and experiment with the cooking time to suit your cooking preference.

After 5 minutes of cooking, remove basket from air fryer.  Do not press the power button before removing the basket because it will turn off air fryer.

Place basket on top of trivet.  Shake basket and toss french fries.

Insert the basket back into the air fryer.  The air fryer will automatically power back up and will continue air frying the french fries for the last 5 minutes.

After a total of 10 minutes (two five-minute intervals) of air frying the french fries, the air fryer will beep 3 times and turn off.  Remove basket from air fryer and place on top of trivet.  Check fries for tenderness.  However, if the french fries are not tender and/or you prefer a crispier texture, you can cook the fries for an additional 5 minutes or to your liking.

The french fries were tender and crispy after 10 minutes of air frying.
