Fried Ripe Plantains – Ninja

(Amarillos - Ninja Air Fryer)

Fried Ripe Plantains (Ninja Foodie Deluxe Air Fryer) are an excellent way of consuming your favorite side dish without the excess oil.  The fried ripe plantains are referred to as amarillos or maduros.  Plantains are considered a staple in our culture.  The plantain may be prepared and eaten at various stages in its ripeness.  For this recipe, I will be using two (2) yellow plantains.  The yellow plantain is riper and slightly sweet.  When fried, they tend to caramelize with a golden brown color and crispy edges.

However, when cooking the ripe plantains in an air fryer, you get the benefit of consuming fried ripe plantains in a healthier version.  They are also golden brown with crispy edges.  Above all, the plantains are as tasty as the regular fried plantains but with minimal oil absorbed into the plantains.

Fried Ripe Plantains – Ninja For Vegans and Vegetarians!

Most importantly, the Fried Ripe Plantains are also great for those individuals that are vegans and vegetarians.  Furthermore, the plantains are considered gluten free and can be used as a substitute due to its starchy content.

A Little Bit of Food History!

The plantain is believed to have originated in Southeast Asia.  It is also grown in India, Africa, Middle East, Europe and Tropical America.  In addition, the plantains are a member of the banana family.  However, they are longer, thicker much starchier than the familiar banana.  In Puerto Rico, we normally cook the plantains (green or ripe plantains) prior to consuming them.

Cutting and Peeling the Ripe Plantains!

Cut off both ends of the yellow plantain with a knife.

With a knife, make a slit lengthwise from top to bottom barely touching the flesh of the plantain.

Remove the peel with your hands.

Cut plantain diagonally into 1 to 1½-inch thick slices.

Preheating the Unit!

This is the Ninja Foodie Deluxe model.  We will be using the Air Crisp program to air fry the ripe plantains.

Insert the Cook & Crisp basket into pot.

Close the crisping lid and preheat the unit for 5 minutes.  Turn on the power and select the air crisp program.  Set the temperature to 360°F and set the time to 5 minutes.  Lastly, press the Start/Stop button to begin.

Reprograming the Settings for Air Frying the Fried Ripe Plantains!

Close lid and reprogram the settings.  Turn on power. Select the air crisp program.  Set the temperature to 360°F.  Set the time to 15 minutes.  For your information, I plan to check the plantains after 8 minutes of air frying.  Press the start/stop button to start the unit.

After 8 minutes of air frying, open lid.  You should try to check your food item at least once during the air frying process.

This is the moment that you can turn the plantains to the other side if you want to.  Since the plantains are browning beautifully, let’s continue with air frying the plantains for the remaining minutes.

When you close the lid, the unit will resume cooking.

The ripe plantains just finished air frying for a total of 15 minutes.   This time let’s check the plantains for doneness.

I like to turn at least one or two air fried plantains to make sure the level of doneness is to my liking.

The air fried plantains are golden brown with crispy edges.  They look perfect.  Serve them immediately while they are still warm.   Make sure to power off the unit.

Fried Ripe Plantains - Ninja

We usually serve the fried plantains as a side dish to accompany the main course.  However, it can also be served as a snack or dessert due to its sweetness.   Furthermore, this is definitely a much healthier version in preparing our fried ripe plantains.  The plantains are as tasty as the regular fried plantains but without being saturated with oil.
