Papaya Fruit Drink

(Batida de Papaya)

It does not seem like 45 years ago when I tasted my first tropical fruit drink in the Caribbean – specifically in Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic).  These fruit beverages today are known as smoothies.

Every morning I would go to the beach and order the most delicious creamy papaya fruit drink while vacationing in Santo Domingo during their Annual Merengue Festival.  There were other tropical fruit flavors to choose from but my favorite was always the “Papaya.”

I love the Papaya fruit drink especially when only four ingredients are needed to prepare this tropical drink:  papaya, milk, sugar and ice cubes.

Delicious Tropical Fruit Drink for the Summer Months!

The main ingredient is the papaya.  The papaya should be very ripe to make this tropical fruit drink.  When the skin of the papaya has a yellow-orange-light green color, the papaya is ripe.  However, If the skin color is a solid green, the fruit is still green.   The papaya is native to Mexico, Central America and Northern part of South America.  There are different shapes and sizes depending on the variety.  The Caribbean papaya are very large.  The papaya fruit is very rich in Vitamin C.  Furthermore, it is considered a powerful digestive aid because it contains a digestive enzyme called Papain.

How to Prepare a Papaya Fruit Drink!

Cut the papaya in half lenthwise.

When you cut into a ripe papaya, it has a distinct fruity aroma.  The texture and flavor are often compared to a melon but not as sweet.  The flesh of the papaya has a reddish orange color.  The cavity contains small black seeds and their appearance is similar to capers.  These seeds are edible and have a peppery flavor.

With a spoon, remove the seeds from the center of the papaya.

Store the seeds in the refrigerator and add them to your salad for a peppery flavor!

Cut the papaya into wedges.

Peel the papaya wedges by inserting a knife between the flesh and skin.  Cut each wedge into 1 to 1½-inch chunks.

Add the papaya chunks, milk, sugar and ice cubes in an electric blender.  Beat at high speed until all the ingredients are well blended and form a creamy texture.

Pour yourself a glass of this creamy tropical drink and relax while you are enjoying the fruity melon flavor!

TIP:  In addition, you can place the remaining papaya chunks in a container and store them in the refrigerator if they are consumed within a week.  Similarly, you can vacuum seal the papaya chunks and place them in the freezer for future use.
